The Best Medicine

It was nine o'clock in the middle of Manhattan. The smell of a hospital could be so familiar if you're a patient here. A boy walked towards room 213 and asked a nurse, "Is this the room for Andrew Collins?" The nurse came to him and answered, "Yes, and you are welcome to come in."
Drew smiled. "thank you, umm..... what's your name?"
"Elisabeth," the nurse answered. "it's Beth, actually."
"Thank Beth! anyway, do i have a roomate?" Drew asked, walking to the room. the room's pretty comfortable. it has enough spaces for two patients and their family. A television hangs on the wall. there's a big window beside the bed, which shows how beautiful Manhattan is.
"Yes! Be quiet, she's asleep at these times." answered Beth.
"She? my roomate's a woman?" he asked again, but lowering his voice.
"A girl, to be exact. she's fifteen" whisppered Beth. "now tale a rest. you shouldn't even walkin this condition!"
"Oh okay, i will" promised Drew. he lies on his bed while beth walked out. "Wow. fifteen! we have thins to talk to. Phew, i thought my roomate was gonna be an old lady talking about the days before independence all the time."
     "Hahahaha" someone giggled/
"Huh?" he gasped, realizing his roomate was sleeping. "OMG, i woke you up didn't? Oh, i'm sorry!"
      "It;s alright!" answered the girl.
"you'll forgive me, won't you? i mean, it's not like i ate your dog or something," he said. "i mean, no! i don't eat dogs! especially yours, i mean, i don't even know you have a dog or not! so.... ough. i guess you can ignore that last thing." he continued.
"Drew! what were you thinking? ate a dog? you don't eat dogs!" Drew whispered to himself. "And that was probably the most awkward thing ever!"
"Hahaha.... you're funny. i dont even need to see your face!" the girl said.
"Really?" aked Drew, unvelieving. "You should see Chaplin! he;s so funny and lucky! i tried wearing bigger pants and smaller shirt once, but i didn't work! Hmmmm.., maybe lucky doesn't come from that"
the girl won't stop laughing. "Hahahaha..... you, you really made my day! i never laughed this much before."
"Day? it's nine in the morning! and you just woke up a moment ago! how could you call that a day?"
"It doesn't mean that way!" she said, giggling.
Her roomate paused. "Really?" asked Drew, confused.
"Your voice is really innocent. you're funny , and you sounded like you don't even realize you're in a hospital. it's like you're perfectly healthy! why are you here anyway?" asked the girl
"WELL....i don't really know! my mom says i should stay here for a week, more or less. she wont tell me what happened, ' cause she said she doesnt even know herself. i'm perfectly fine with it, though i sometimes have trouble breathing. woah, and it's happening right now!" explained Drew. after a few seconds, he continued, "Nut look at the bright side, no physics test!"
the girl laughed again. "you know, i'm so glad i'm not alone anymore now. i broke my leg last week. i was in my ballet club, and , well.... i slipped. silly me."
"You're a ballerina? that;s so cool! ballet for girls is like basketball for boys, awesome! it's too bad that  you slipped. but it's okay, you won't even know i exist if you hadn't!"  cheered Drew. "By the way, i'me Drew."
"It's very nice to know you, Drew. I'm kate."
"hi, Kate! do you have a dog?"
And the conversation went on. they talked all day. their family, great TV shows, pets, local artist, even how boring mathematic classes are. Kate and Drew both enjoyed their time. they talked about everything, and Kate even discovered a new Knock-knock joke!
"Okay, that  was awesome. i have never told anyone joke, especially the ones i made my sellf!" said Kate, likes she was very proud of herself.
"Yeah! and that was extremely funny!" added Drew.
"Hahaha, great. anyway, do you believe that  poster?" Kate asked.
Drew looked around the room. there's only one poster there, and it says "Laugh is the bes medicine"
He wasn't so sure, so he said the truth anyway. " Well, no. what if you have lungs disease? wouldn't it be worse if you laughed? that really made me think!"
"Hahahaha... you have a point there. it couldn've been worse! but honestly, i kind of think it was right. since you came, i feel a lot better. may be i do believe that 'best medicine thing." said Kate.
"Well, maybe yes.... it's up to you/"
Drew agreed, though he's still not so sure about that thing. something bothered him, deep inside. he started to think about his mother, who is probably worried about his situation right now. but whatever thet situation is, he;s sure he started to feel it these days.

A week passed. its winter and things get a lot colder than before. No more colourful leaves to look out the window, but there are various snownmen to laugh at. the winter is different to Drew. everything is freezing instead of just cold. something else is different too, but what? Drew wondered all day.
"Hey Drew," said Kate, starting the conversation. "Are you sure your mom hasn't thought of your disease yet?"
Drew was concerned about himself, but he hid it somewhere between his smiles. "Umm... no i guess. i don't even know what could bother me in a perfect winter! i mean, look! even the clouds are smiling! being this tall above the ground is so muc interesting, " lied Drew
"Yeah, i agree. but i can't see the view, though. the window is on your side of the room!" said Kate. she noticed something was different. she felt her knees moving a little bit. her situation changed, she is better than last month. something else is different too, but what? Kate wondered all day.
"Do you even notice that we've never seen each other?" asked Kate, breaking the ice.
"Hey, yeah. i never noticed that!" answered Drew. he yawned. "Hoam, this hot chocolate made me sleepy! i think i need a nap."
"Oh okay. sure, go ahead." Said Kate.
so Drew had a long nap. Along, long , nap.

Kate woke up the next day. it feels like she had been sleeping all week. she checked the calendar. "DECEMBER" . she sighed gladly.
"Drew?" she called/
No answer. maybe hee's still asleep, she thought/ suddenly, Beth came in.
"Kate! today's the day, honey. you're knees are perfectly okay!"
Kate looked surprised, like she never wanted for this to happen. Beth carried her down to her wheelchair and pushed her outside. Kate glanced for the last time to room 213.
Beth pushed her to the lift when she saw an unconscious teenage boy being carried with hospital bed. "Excuse me, ma'am. sir, please let us through. Excuse me." A doctor said, pushhing the poor boy to the other way.
Kate took a breath. Here goes nothing, She thought.
